Hersham Youth Centre – A profile
Hersham Youth Centre is a youth club based in Hersham, which has been at Arch Road since February 2002.
We provide a safe, fun, entertaining and educational place for young people aged 11 to 25 years old. We offer all of this at absolutely no cost to our members. We have an affordable coffee bar onsite that is run by volunteers every session, this offers hot and cold drinks, crisps, chocolate bars, ice creams and many more. With a current staff team of 9 youth workers, 5 of whom are ex-members at the youth club themselves. We also have a large number of volunteers who are a vital part of the club.
We now run 6 sessions a week, our senior sessions run on Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings for young people ages 14 to 25 years old from 7:30pm till 10pm. After a few years we realised the need to run a session for a younger age group and the intermediate sessions were created and they have a different feel to them. Running on Mondays and Thursday’s they are tailor made for young people ages 11 to 13 years old, even running at the slightly earlier time of 7pm till 9pm. We have exceeded our expectations, last year we had a total of 8400 visit’s from young people.
We started our Friday nights session to provide a central place for young people to meet on a Friday and have fun with their friends. We are open for young people aged 13 to 25 years old from 7:30pm till 10pm. Our Saturday is unique, providing a space for all members aged 11 to 25 to join in together in the afternoon, we are open 1pm til 5pm. The youth centre has many facilities that are free to all members, they can choose from playing pool, ping pong, football table, computers or even enjoy our music room. We offer free Wi-Fi, outside football pitch and even provide nail art classes. We run activities like healthy eating, fireworks display, Chinese new year and recently had the company of Cllr Margaret Hicks on Pancake Duty where was it reported that the 40+ pancakes she made disappeared as quickly as they were served!
We run extra sessions and outings from day trips to Brighton and Portsmouth to sleepovers, DISCO’s and BBQ’s. We also have taken young people on training weekends, where they can have the opportunity to build on valuable life skills and enjoy the whole weekend totally free. Our current members and ex-members are involved in the upkeep and maintenance of our building, volunteering to assist staff with painting, cleaning and building. This provides young people with experience, knowledge and satisfaction of knowing they helped create something.
We have a Facebook and Twitter account that is regularly daily with what’s happening at the youth centre, sharing photos and keeping young people informed if we do close – which is only over bank holidays and 2 weeks at Christmas time, this enables us to provide the youth club for a massive 50 weeks a year.
