SGN Gasworks Queens Road Hersham Area for 15 weeks

SGN Gasworks Queens Road Hersham Area for 15 weeks

We’ve recently been made aware of some work to upgrade the gas network being carried out by Southern Gas Network along the Queens Road area which are due to start today (31st July) and scheduled to last for 15 weeks (!) till the 5th of November.

It has also been noted that they will be working extended hours, seven days a week, during the project.

“This essential work involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply.”

It will consist of three separate phases, each phase resulting in different roads being closed for the duration of that specific phase.

There are contact details for SGN at the end of this post should you have any questions or concerns.

Phase one – approximately three weeks – 31st July to 20 August

Work will start on Tuesday 31 July on the A317 Queensway/Queens Road roundabout.

“To ensure everyone’s safety around our site, we need to temporarily close the West Grove, Westcar Lane and Queens Road junctions at the roundabout for the duration of our first phase. Signed diversions will be in place for motorists.

Traffic will still be able to travel along the A317 (Queensway/Queens Road) across the roundabout. However, we’ll have temporary traffic lights on the A317 spanning the roundabout to manage traffic flow.”

I found the above statement a little contradictory as it seems to suggest that the Queens Road junction of the roundabout will be closed but then says that traffic can travel along Queensway to Queens Road.

Following that route this afternoon the Queens Road junction at the roundabout was OPEN but West Grove and Westcar Lane were CLOSED and will be for 3 weeks from the 31st July.

And as you can see from the main page image there is quite an extensive diversion in place (purple highlighted route).

Phase two – approximately six weeks – 20 August to 1st October

In late August, work area will move westwards on the A317 between Charlton Avenue and Woodside Avenue.

“We need to install temporary traffic lights on the A317 around these junctions for everyone’s safety.

We also need to close Charlton Avenue and Woodside Avenue to the A317 junction while we carry out this phase of our project.

Signed diversions will be in place throughout with access to these roads maintained via Mayfield Road.”

Phase three – approximately six weeks (1st October to 5th November)

From Monday 1 October, the work area and temporary traffic lights will progress further westwards along the A317 to the junction of Burwood Park Road.

“For safety, we need to close Burwood Park Road while our engineers upgrade our network by this junction. Access will be maintained via Mayfield Road and a signed diversion route will be in place for motorists.

We will be working extended hours, seven days a week, during our project to complete our work as quickly and safely as possible.

We will also be manually operating our temporary traffic lights during peak hours to help manage traffic flow.

We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, Hersham residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
