Chicken Pox, Fevers, Stuffy Noses and Sleep

Summer is a wonderful time of year but it is frequently accompanied by colds, flu and other germy viruses.

If you have a baby or toddler in your home, chances are you’ve needed to stock up on tissue boxes, find your thermometer as well as your stash of pain relievers and fever reducers. It’s not fun to see your precious babes sick and frequently once these unwelcome viruses depart, you’re left with little ones who aren’t sleeping well. Illness is one of the most common causes of child sleep regressions.

Here are a few tips to get your little one sleeping better as soon as possible:

  • When your little man is sick, give him all of the comfort and cuddles he needs but as soon as he starts to feel better, get him back into his routine right away. Bad sleep habits can develop in as little 3 days/nights, so the sooner you get back to the routine, the less likely you’ll experience a sleep regression.
  • Encourage lots of sleep! Sleep is so important, especially when sick. If you can, stick to your normal routine – especially by getting up at the same time in the morning. If you start the day off well and can keep naps and bedtime at the same time, you may avoid a sleep regression altogether.
  • Keeping up with nutrition and hydration while ill is important but sometimes your little one just isn’t hungry. As she starts to feel better and her appetite improves, provide lots of good nutrition. Before bed, a snack with a combination of protein and carbohydrates provides good nourishment that will help prevent any wake-ups overnight due to hunger.

It may take a few days to get past any post-illness sleep regression but staying patient, calm and consistent with your message and approach is the key to getting back to good sleep as soon as possible.
