White Boots – Noel Streatfeild

White Boots – Noel Streatfeild

white-bootsThis is a magical classic but more of a girly story in my opinion. It is about two girls from very different family backgrounds who met on an ice rink and became best friends, despite their very different lives and personalities. Together they work hard on becoming better at skating but can Harriet come close to reaching her goal of becoming famous? Is she going to become like that famous ice-skater whom she saw on the poster?

Laila is hoping to fulfil her aunt’s expectations of her, which requires hard work too. This is also a story of Toby and Alec (Harriet’s older brothers), who are trying to become rich and successful by secretly using Laila’s vegetable patch…but we never find out whether they succeed.

For me, this book gives a message that even if you don’t start by having the best ability at something (like ice-skating), practising very hard every day can help you become good at it so it is worth trying. It is difficult to predict how this book will end, which makes it more exciting and leaves possibilities for the sequel. I hope there is one.

I would rate this book 4.5 stars and would definitely recommend it to my friends though I think all children age 8-11 would enjoy it as much as I did.
