Burwood Road and Pleasant Place – Proposed Improvements

Burwood Road and Pleasant Place – Proposed Improvements

As part of our Election 2016 coverage we put an open question out on our various social media channels asking local residents to submit any questions or concerns for us to put forward to the local candidates. One thing that came up time and again was the current road setup on Burwood Road/Pleasant Place.

You may have heard that there is currently a consultation taking place for some traffic improvements around Pleasant Place. A copy of the consultation papers are in the Library as well as having been distributed by SCC around the Pleasant Place/Burhill School area, inviting anyone to complete and give their views.

We have published details of the consultation papers here but also have everything available as a pdf download at the bottom of the page.

Consultation Letter:

Dear Resident

Burwood Road / Pleasant Place – Proposed Improvements

Surrey County Council highways officers have been working with County Councillor Margaret Hicks to develop proposals for alterations at the junction of Burwood Road and Pleasant Place. Elmbridge Borough Councillors for the Hersham area have also been involved in development. The scheme aims to improve safety and traffic flow, and to reduce conflict between vehicles and pedestrians. It is anticipated that particular benefits would be for pedestrians travelling to and from Burhill Primary School and the local shops and amenities in the Hersham Green shopping area.

It is proposed to:

  • Provide an island for pedestrians to improve the route across the junction and help slow vehicles turning into Pleasant Place from Burwood Road.
  • Introduce a traffic order to make the access to the parking area from Pleasant Place only, to stop cars cutting through to Pleasant Place from the area near the bus stop. Buses and delivery vehicles would still be able to turn in near the bus stop.
  • Construct a raised table at the end of Burwood Road near the mini-roundabout. This aims to reduce vehicle speeds and would include improved crossing facilities.
  • Widen the footway on the west side of Pleasant Place to improve the route for pedestrians.
  • Provide an additional crossing point on Pleasant Place near to the school, potentially including a priority give way system to slow vehicles.

The proposals are shown on the plan enclosed. Larger copies of the plan are available to view at Hersham Library, Molesey Road KT12 4RF.

It is important that the views of the residents form part of the process of developing a scheme that is supported by the local community. Therefore I would be grateful if you could spare the time to consider the proposals and return the short questionnaire. Any comments relating to the proposals may be made on the attached questionnaire sheet, or via the contact details at the top of this letter.

Please return the short questionnaire plus any additional comments in the postage paid envelope by 10 June 2016.

The comments received will be analysed and considered before a decision is made on how to proceed. Should the scheme be supported, it is likely that it would be constructed in 2017. Detailed design would include consideration of comments received, and consultation with parties including conservation officers to agree suitable materials and the bus companies to manage possible effects.

Funding for the scheme would be provided by Elmbridge Local Committee, with potential contributions from developments in the local area.
