Pride In Surrey

Just before we went off on our family two week tour across the wild, wet and windy landscape of beautiful West Wales we spoke to Stephen Ireland about publishing a post about his new Pride In Surrey initiative…

 

“For years Surrey has been silent within the LGBTQ+ community but from inspiration of many community Pride events around the UK founder of ‘Pride in Surrey’ Stephen A Ireland decided it was time to act.

Stephen, Host and compere at UK Pride that was held on the Isle of Wight, Pride in London, and also is a named as official host at this year’s EuroPride in Gothenburg was left feeling inspired from the amazing support and love he witnessed at the events he has already attended.

As Co-founder of a community radio station http://itsNineRadio.com which gives voice to anyone globally who wants to get involved he decided enough was enough and with Surrey being one of the largest counties in the UK he knew it was time to spring into action.

The mission of ‘Pride in Surrey’ is to celebrate the inclusion and diversity of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT+) culture and community within Surrey and neighbouring counties.

• We’ll make it our mission to educate both the general community and the LGBT+ communities about the needs, troubles and various other aspects of LGBT+ culture.
• We’ll celebrate these communities and provide a forum to share the history and accomplishments of the LGBT+ people whilst establish how we can also improve and educate those who don’t necessarily understand it.
• We’ll create a welcoming environment for networking and outreach for services and community opportunities for LGBT+ people, their friends, families and acquaintances.

Stephen and his small team are now starting to build the foundations to bring Surrey’s 1st ever Pride event in 2019 however it won’t happen without your support.

Whether the Pride in Surrey event in 2019 is a small affair or a big floor filler we hope that the local community stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. Location and Date are currently sitting with a large council for final approvals, we’ll confirm via our socials and website as soon as things are 100% set!

Following our return we have discovered the amazing news that Pride In Surrey is now actually a thing – life in Surrey moves very quickly – and we are very pleased to announce that on the 10/08/2019 Surrey will hold its 1st ever LGBT+ Pride event in Woking.

This is what Stephen had to say:

With so many amazing places in Surrey it was difficult for the team to pick out a host borough however it was evident from the off that Woking ticked many of the requirements.

With good transport links, good accessibility and the local regeneration of Woking the team embarked on a journey to secure the location on the date confirmed.

“I have been inspired by various Pride events across the UK this year alongside charities such as Outline Surrey and Educate & Celebrate. 2019 will mark the 50th year of Stonewall but it will also mark the 1st year of an LGBT+ Pride event in Surrey and I am thrilled to be working with such a supportive council and the CEO of Outline Surrey to not only create an amazing event but also raise awareness of the available support to those within the community’. – Stephen Ireland (Chairman of Pride in Surrey)

Cllr Will Forster, Mayor of Woking, added: “We are delighted that Woking will host the inaugural Pride in Surrey parade on Saturday 10th August 2019. It is another example of Woking’s growing reputation for hosting colourful and inclusive annual events”.

“Pride in Surrey celebrates the inclusion and diversity of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT+) culture and community within Surrey. With Stephen’s wealth of experience working on both UK and international Pride events, I have no doubt that he and the team will create a parade second to none that will bring together all communities within Surrey and beyond.”

The ‘Pride in Surrey’ team are extremely excited to have now confirmed the date and will be sharing the finer details in the coming months.

The date for everyone’s diaries is 10/08/2019 and we’ll stress it’s a FREE event welcoming absolutely everyone.
